3.1 CIA Report on GDP
Pick a country other than the United States. Take a look at that country’s GDP and GDP per capita.
Write 150 to 200 words. Provide answers to why the GDP and GDP per capita of this country differs from the United States. Give facts supporting your statement if possible.

The GDP for Liechtenstein ranks number one in the world. Liechtenstein is even higher than the U.S. One of the reasons for this is that the people of Liechtenstein are all above the poverty level. The country exports many things like many metals and medical items. They export much more than they import. Liechtenstein is one of the world’s smallest and richest countries causing the GDP to rise. Because it is a small country, there are few people that live there. So the GDP per capita is very high almost $120,000. Only 1.5% of the population of Liechtenstein is unemployed, ranking 10th in the world. They import almost 3 million dollars, while importing only 1.5 million. The exchange rate from their currency, the franc, is 1.0774 US dollars. Because of their land being mainly mountains, they don’t farm very much at all. Only about 5% of their population is farmers. The other 95% working in highly developed factories.
South Africa GDP-
South Africa’s economy isn’t near that of the United States. Their poverty is set at 50 %! as to the United States with 12%. Their land area is just less than double the size of Texas. Arable land is low. They have prolonged droughts. Their Gross Domestic Product is $491 billion, which puts them at 26 in the world list. The Gross Domestic Product Per capita is $10,100. The unemployment rate is 22.9%.They do grow many products such as corn, wheat, sugarcane, fruits, vegetables; beef, poultry, mutton, wool, and dairy products. They import more oil than they output, which never helps any economy to import more than outputs. The county has $71.81 billion in debt as of December 31, 2008. That puts them at 43 in comparison to the world. That is pretty good compared to the United States with being the number one country with 13.64 trillion dollars. Over all, South Africa is doing alright in comparison to the world and especially to the United States in some areas. Keeping their resources in mind, they are just fine.
Zimbabwe:
The country has a GDP of $1.925 billion which ranks as 183 in the world. It also has a GDP per capita of $200. There are several reasons for Zimbabwe’s bad economy. One was its involvement in the war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo which took millions of dollars from its economy. This put the country in large amounts of debt from which it couldn’t recover. Also, the large amount of inflation has put the country behind. Another reason is the country’s high unemployment rate of 80%, and the fact that 68% of the population is below the poverty line. The country also suffers from deforestation, soil erosion, air and water pollution, and high mortality rates due to aids. One final reason is the government’s land reform program, which has been described as chaotic and violent. The program has been credited with badly damaging the commercial farming sector, its traditional source of exports and jobs. This damaging has caused Zimbabwe to become a net importer of food. These are some of the reasons for the bad shape of Zimbabwe’s economy.
$39,100 is Canada’s GDP. Canada’s GDP is different than the United States because Canada has much more coastline. They may not actually have that much more; it is much easier to access because the water sources weave in and out of the land. A lot of the shore is very rocky, there is no road development near the shoreline, and there is little to no population near the shoreline. Canada is much larger and has much more water than the United States but just isn’t heavily populated and well developed like we are. If Canada had a bigger population it could easily compete with the United States and possibly be more successful than them. United States has a much more varied land layout they have the volcanoes, low mountains and hills, rigid mountains, valleys, plains, and broad river valleys. Canada is mainly all plains with a very small amount of mountains. The climate in Canada is severely different to the climate in the United States, Canada has arctic and sub arctic climates while the United States has a temperate climate and even experience some tropical climates. Therefore the U.S. has a higher GDP than Canada because of these factors.
Iraq GPD
Iraq’s GPD is $3,700 dollars per year. Compared to USA our GPD capita is $46,900 per year. One of the reasons that they might not make as much money as the USA is because of the war that is going on over there, and all the land and buildings that they might have to fix if it gets damaged because of the war. Another reason that they might not get as much money a year is because of their population. Iraq has 28,945,657 people; the United States has 307,212,123 people. So the USA has way more people and all the crops that the USA produces. Maybe Iraq doesn’t have very much money because of all the oil that they have to export to other countries. Iraq also exports more than they import. Export: $66.1 billion Import: $43.5 billion. The USA Exports: $1.291 trillion and imports: $2.112 trillion. So the USA gets more then they send out unlike Iraq where they send more then they get.
The reason why the GDP and GDP per capita from Russia is different from the United States is because only 7.77% of Russia’s land is arable compared to United States to 18.01%. In some spots the land in Russia is humid while other is subarctic. In the subarctic and mountains the land isn’t use able so all that space is losing money. Also the population is dropping so there isn’t going to be as many people to work. The life expectancy in Russia is 66 years compared to the United States 78 years. Russia has had 40,000 people die from AIDS/HIV while the United States has 22,000 deaths. Russia has 1,216 airports while United States has 15,095. Only 595 airports have paved runways in Russia while United States has 5,174. Russia has 87,157 km which is third in the world and the United States has 226,427 km which is second. Russia has 933,000 km of roadways which is ninth compared to United States 6,465,799 km which is the leader in the whole world. Russia’s GDP per capita is $16,100 United States has $46,900.
China in comparison the United States is different in many ways, although they are different in some ways too. For example, China has a population of 1,338,612,968 (as of July 2009) per 9,569,901 sq km of land. Compared to the United States, it has a population of 307,212,123 (as of July 2009) per 9,161,966 sq km of land. The United states has 664,709 sq km of water where China only has 27,060. This means we, the U.S. can use this for exporting goods faster and become more organized. China imports more than they export by almost half their amount they are spending. This will create them to go into debt since the exports produce most the money a country receives. As a result of this, China’s economy has a GDP per capita of $6,000, which is extremely low compared to the U.S. We have $46,900 per capita, and we are still not the most efficient country in the world.

China
France is ranked 39 for GDP- per capita with $33,200. The United States is ranked 10 with $46,900. 6% of France’s population is below the poverty line while the United States has 12% of its population below the poverty line. France’s unemployment rate is 7.4% while the United States’ unemployment rate is 7.2%. France’s official exchange rate is $2.866 trillion. The United States’ official exchange rate is $14.26 trillion. France has 2% agriculture, 24.3% industry, and 71.8% services. The United States has 1.2% agriculture, 19.2% industry, and 79.6% services. France is slightly less the size of Texas compared to the United States. France has 33.6% arable land, 2.03% permanent crops, and 64.51% other for their land use while the United States has 18.01% arable land, 0.21% permanent crops, and 81.78% other for their land use. Japan has 127,078,679 people and the average GDP is $34,000 American dollars which is ranked 37th in the world. This could be because there labor force is for agriculture: 4.4%, industry: 27.9%, services: 66.4%, where the United States use of labor is farming, forestry, and fishing 0.6%, manufacturing, extraction, transportation, and crafts 22.6%, managerial, professional, and technical 35.5%, sales and office 24.8%, other services 16.5%. They are ranked 48th in the world for people unemployed with only 4% of people. Either no one is below the poverty line or it just isn’t available. Japan is ranked 206 in the world for GDP with -.70%. Where the United States’ GDP is +1.10% (which is surprising since were in a “recession”). With the little land Japan has, for farming they produce rice, sugar beets, vegetables, fruit; pork, poultry, dairy products, eggs; fish, while the United States produces wheat, corn, other grains, fruits, vegetables, cotton; beef, pork, poultry, dairy products; fish; forest products. Japan is also 4th in the world for oil consumption using 5,007,000 barrels a day, where the United States is 1st using 20,680,000 barrels a day, average.
Mexico has a GDP of 1.088 trillion. Mexico’s per capita GDP is $14,200. Mexico has 9,330 km of coastline. Much of this coastline is made up of beautiful beaches that attract tourists. The tropical climate also attracts tourist. Mexico has many natural resources, the main ones being petroleum, silver, copper, gold, lead, zinc, natural gas, and timber which helps contribute to the economy. Only 12.66 percent of Mexico is arable land. Farming does not contribute to the economy as much as it does in the United States. Most of the people are young in Mexico and haven’t yet started or are not fully capable to do their job. Mexico has a lot of food or water born diseases which makes much of their population sick. Only 91 percent of Mexicans can read or write over the age of 15. This is 8% less than the United States. Mexico may attract a lot of tourists but the people who live there are not as well educated as the people in the United States.
